Background to Primary languages

Modern foreign language (MFL) is not a compulsory national curriculum subject at key stages 1 and 2, but it is government policy that by 2010 every child in key stage 2 should have an entitlement to learn a language other than English. www.qca.org.uk

Schemes of work for key stage 2 French were published in October 2007. The schemes show how the objectives of the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages (DfES, 2005) can be interpreted for the classroom, Teachers are encouraged to adapt ideas from the scheme to meet their pupils' needs and the priorities of their school or department.” www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes.

Lord Dearing in the Languages review document of 2007 proposed that languages should be embedded in the primary curriculum, recognising that the teaching of languages can be introduced through cross-curricular work, and can draw on young children’s sense of fun. The report recommends informal classroom assessment using the Languages Ladder at the end of Key Stage 2. See the full report: www.teachernet.gov.uk/languagesreview

Other developments in the primary sector include PPA entitlement for class teachers remodelling and the introduction of extended schools.

We offer a French supply teaching service at very competitive rates. Our qualified and experienced staff deliver courses designed to fit the languages ladder specification and provide every pupil with a Junior European Languages Portfolio as a celebration of their progress and evidence that they are meeting with the required standards. We believe that children learn most effectively when they are engaged and we arrive with a complete package to achieve this. Our package is inclusive of all resources.
