Developments in KS 3 and 4
The Dearing languages review of 2007 recognised the need for strengthening incentives for schools and young people themselves to continue with languages after 14. The report demonstrates that in KS 4, where languages have become non statutory there has been a significant decline in the proportion of students continuing language learning in the last 2 years of statutory education. It recognises the need to make available a range of more flexible language courses with accreditation so that more young people can keep up language learning even if they are not doing a full GCSE course. Other recommendations of the review include:
- recognising the value of short immersion to rapid learning courses to raise enjoyment.
- Encouraging the use of ICT which is an interactive and immensely patient language learning tool that encourages developing international links
- Encouraging Government policy on work experience and enterprise education outside school to highlight languages in the world of work and it’s value in business
- A need to enter into the young people’s world in topic choice and exploitation of interactive learning packages.
- Encouraging visits and exchanges.
- Adopting more flexible approaches in the organisation of language learning and assessments.
MYL in Secondary
GCSE Preparation: MYL offers a GCSE preparation service for year Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils. The emphasis of the programme is on building learners confidence in oracey. The maximum number of pupils is 5 per group. The workshops are run as extended school activities either funded by parents or by the school.
Immersion courses – MYL works with secondary partners to develop courses during half term or holidays for groups of young people who may be gifted and talented and want to develop a particular skill area in French. Courses could also be for pupils who decide against GCSE entry to languages but wish to return simply for a refresher and enhancement of their language skills as a preliminary to having them assessed and certified through the languages ladder.
French Supply Teacher Service - Our French speaking teachers are trained to provide language cover in key stage 3 and 4. Our rates are very competitive and our services are tailored to suit the need of each client school.
